A Far Wilder Magic by Allison Saft

5.0

I loved this book so much. I actually sobbed a bit and this isn’t the norm for me. One eyelash extension was harmed in the reading of this novel.

There’s some negative feedback about the setting: it’s a little vague. The exact time period is unclear but estimated to be around the 1920s. Terminology isn’t 100% period accurate. The religions are somewhat confusing at first until you get into the characters relationships. I can agree with these points, however:

If some details of the world building is easy enough to set aside for you, it’s a beautiful, relatable story about overcoming adversity and still having hope for something better. Maggie and Wes are so different from each other but in a way are equally relatable. The slow build of falling in love, the complicated families, exploration of loss and grief, and the character development are realistic and believable vs a lot of fantasy novels (which i admit is sometimes satisfying too) but this is just a beautifully written love story.
