The Eastbrook Diaries by Michelle Richards-Graham

5.0

It is a wonder any of us ever make it through high school. Home life combined with the jungle that is high school could break anyone, especially a teenager.

This book centers around Roland, Jasmine, and Mya, three close friends who have been together since elementary school. The day finally comes when they must enter high school. But not just any high school, Eastbrook High School, with a notorious reputation for hazing the new tenth grade arrivals.

Jasmine carries around a chip on her shoulder from eighth grade when a popular girl stole her boyfriend. Mya has a nervous habit of snacking on things when she gets stressed. Her parents are also at odds because her mother works too much and her father is resentful of his wife being gone all the time. But it's for her career, right?

Roland's dad died when he was hit by a drunk driver and his mother numbed the pain of losing the love of her life by focusing all her time and attention on building a power career and dating any man who had money and power of his own. The pain of losing his father physically, and his mother emotionally, leaves Roland feeling empty.

On their first day of school, Jasmine and Mya are sitting at a table eating lunch. The second most popular girl in school comes up and makes a scene telling them to move, but Jasmine isn't having it and stands up to her. This gives Jasmine instant credibility with the most popular girl in school.

And this is where it all unravels.

Jasmine, who vowed she would never hang with the popular girls after one walked off with her man in junior high, gets caught up with the popular crowd and begins to drift further and further away from Roland and Mya.

Roland, desperate for affection and missing his father, gains the attention of a teacher.

Mya, has a new boyfriend who really is a nice guy and so smart. They go out on a date to a little cafe and Mya sees something there that rocks her world.

I don't want to ruin anything about this book so all I have left to say is this book is a perfect storm of circumstances that cause them all to make choices that lead to broken hearts, broken friendships, and broken homes.
