Skip by Molly Mendoza
4.0
Skip tells the story of Bloom, a human child, and Gloopy, a child from another dimension under the lake who go on adventures to strange other worlds and on the way learn what they need to to face their fears at home. Mendoza's art is absolutely gorgeous and the book is worth it for that alone. It's brightly coloured, complex and multi-layered and makes you want to go back and re-consider each panel and page. The plot is a little thin and Bloom and Goopy's adventures in strange worlds could use a little more room to breathe, maybe by cutting one or two worlds. The pace at which things move feels really fast and it's hard to imagine their having enough time to bond and have major epiphanies. One thing I thought was really cool is that Mendoza doesn't assign masculine or feminine gender to Bloom or their caretaker, Bee, referring to both as "they/them" throughout.
