Papaya Salad by Elisa Macellari

5.0

In her gorgeously-illustrated debut graphic novel, Elisa Macellari tells the story of her great-uncle Sompong, who was born and raised in Thailand and lived an interesting life in Europe as a military diplomat during WWII. Sompong comes across as a bright, gentle soul who manages to exist on the periphery of global politics even while it shapes his every move. His is nothing like the usual WWII stories we're used to, and it's an interesting perspective. Ultimately the book is grounded in his love for his home country, which Macellari depicts as almost magical, through her own eyes as a young child as well as Sompong's.
