The work of Lake's Edge can only be described as beautifully haunting. If you loved the story of the Secret Garden when you were younger and grew up to now, love everything dark, academic, and morally grey, then you would enjoy this world. It is not an overly complex magic system or world, but that adds to its uniqueness. Everything, including magic, is a give and take. To protect her friends, brother, and man she loves, Leta sacrifices herself to the God of Death at the end of the first book and is now learning the consequences of not seeing them again nor keeping the memories of her family. She learns to use the love of the Lord Under to take control and find her path, while Rowan, the man who loves Leta, is doing the same in the world of the living. Fighting desperately to find their way back to each other. To some, I can understand that the romance could become too much at times, but that is the only thing Leta and Rowan are hanging on to, which is pivotal to the story. Although I did enjoy the first book better, I did like this book, and I was pretty sad to see it end. I hope the author plans to write more about this world as there is so much she could explore. (Lyndall, if you're reading this, please, god give Arien his book).
