The Sky Blues by Robbie Couch
5.0
The blues are bluer up here.
This book. I came into it expecting a quick, fun read. It’s YA after all, I thought. But it proved to me that YA is still a genre I can enjoy. This book was so incredibly beautiful.
I won’t give a synopsis, you can read it your self. This book hut so close to home for me. Sky is from a fictional Northern Michigan town. I grew up in Western Michigan and spent the summers up north. The setting could not be more spot on for me. It reminded me of what it felt like to be young and free and very queer in a small town. I think I forgot just how beautiful that can be. The blues really ARE bluer up in Michigan. As much as I’ve always wanted to escape, a part of me is scared of moving out for real. This book perfectly captured this weird back and forth fear that I’ve been thinking about recently.
It also reminded me of how it just sucks to be queer. Don’t get me wrong, I love being queer and being authentic, but having to hide yourself because people in your area and in your life make it difficult sucks!! This book was so honest about that but also shows that there is hope. I’m lucky enough to have a supportive family and go to school at a very queer college, but it’s still hard. This book is so universal.
This story is so important and I think it’ll make its way on my top 10 books of the year. Yes the plot wasn’t perfect y some writing choices rubbed me the wrong way, but it was sooo amazing despite it. Truly a must read!
