Passion by Monica Walters

3.0

Passion is one of the interconnected standalone books in the Arranged Hearts series that feature various Black authors. The series revolves around a professional matchmaking service that boasts a 90% success rate for Black couples, where individuals meet their match for the first time at the altar. In Passion, we follow Giselle, a dental hygienist, and Gentry, a veterinarian, as they navigate this unconventional path to love.

This was my first book by Monica Walters, and I was immediately hooked by her descriptive and engaging writing. Walters creates characters that are witty, lovable, and incredibly believable. Gentry’s character, in particular, stands out for being witty, protective, and more than a little freaky. His loyalty practically leaps off the page, and it’s hard not to root for him. Giselle, on the other hand, is determined, loving, and compassionate, making her the perfect match for Gentry. Their chemistry is undeniable from the start—sparking not only physical attraction but a deep emotional connection as well.

However, the real drama unfolds shortly after their honeymoon, as Giselle’s ex, the father of her children, becomes a major complication. Walters doesn’t shy away from addressing the complexities of blending families, and she brings up some important questions about when to introduce stepchildren to a new spouse. It’s a topic that will make you think, and I appreciated that Walters tackled it head-on.

That said, while the main conflict was compelling, it did feel like the story went in circles at times, particularly when addressing Giselle’s ex. The pacing slowed down in the middle as the same issue was revisited multiple times without much resolution. But despite this, the book overall was a great read, and the love between Giselle and Gentry is definitely one worth rooting for.

I’ll definitely continue with this series and look forward to reading more from Monica Walters!
