What a beautiful and touching story! Lackey takes what could be a very heavy narrative and turns it into a tale of hope and healing. I loved the use of fabulism to illustrate the tumultuous feelings of some of the characters. The inclusion of Pacific Islander Americans side characters is rare and much needed in middle grade fiction. The text is also very quotable.
