The Great British Christmas by Maria Hubert
informative
lighthearted
fast-paced
2.0
Collection of Christmas stories, poetry and non fiction from various periods of English history (I think there was like one Welsh story, and I don't remember much if anything for Scotland or Northern Ireland). Not a whole lot grabbed me, and I ended up skimming most of it, save for a Kipling poem, some diary entries, and a Tattler piece.
The author had a very "traditional" British culture vibe that made me think she doesn't especially understand that Britain has been multicultural since pre-Roman times (and suspect that she probably voted for Brexit). She also wasn't great at including much historical context; for example, we get Le Morte d'Athur's version of the sword in the stone bit being on Christmas, without referencing that like... Malory made that up in the 15th century, and King Arthur is fictional. Some unintentional entertainment value from including William Makepeace Thackeray's editorial in defence of the Christmas book, which this clearly is.
Anyway, I got it from the library for fic research, and for the price of zero dollars and spending maybe an hour skimming it, I can't complain.
