Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 27 by Hiromu Arakawa

5.0

The series finale, and Hiromu Arakawa really manages to give a proper ending to this series. It's not easy, ending is always an issue especially for something as long as this. And she really manages to give a proper ending to all the important threads. Ed sacrificing his alchemical abilities is rewarding in itself, Mustang is becoming the leader „in the shadows”, Riza at his side, Lin and Mei go back to Xing, LanFan as well, and so on.

It manages to be emotional and to give a proper ending (or beginning) to the relationship between Winry and Ed. It's the natural ending, yet it manages to steal a happy tear from the reader; but I'm unsure why Winry didn't join Ed in his travels. She should've, for certain. Of course, „what happens after this” can be its own story, but one can never be dissatisfied with a good status-quo.

As for the whole series review (I still wonder how the heck did I not write this until now?). Well, the series in itself is splendid, even if it has its moments of weakness, and some characters are left over. Perhaps it's the problem of having a way too big of a cast is what the problem might be. But all said and done, FMA is an excellent series that I heartily recommend to anyone trying to understand what manga is all about. It probably is the most rounded series I read thus far, but I didn't read too many.

The extras are just awesome. They are personal, cute, revealing at times, and makes me think that Arakawa is her own work's first fan. They are a joy to read and they are definitely one of the highlights of the volumes.
