The Resurrectionist: The Lost Work of Dr. Spencer Black by E.B. Hudspeth
3.0
The concept of this book is amazing: a fictional biography of one Dr. Spencer Black, a 19th-century physician who becomes convinced that human mutations are proof that mythological creatures like harpies and satyrs existed, and who will go to horrific lengths to make his point. The front of the book contains the story, which is interesting for fans of horror or just the morbidly curious, but unfortunately starts slow and ends by leaving a ton of plot threads hanging. The last two-thirds of the book is Dr. Black's anatomical drawings of these creatures, which was impressive but hard to dig into unless you were perhaps an anatomy student yourself. I could've used with more written description and/or drawings of organ systems, and less angles of drawings of the same bones and muscles on every creature.
