The Secret History by Donna Tartt
5.0
Holy. This is one of those books that was absolutely brilliant, but also kind of horrible, so I feel like I won’t read it again. I don’t know how many authors are able to craft a story that exudes such a unique mood and atmosphere. This book was so dark and moody that it felt like I was experiencing one of those atmospheric, moody, 19th century style tumblr photos through the whole story. It’s like a cross between The Great Gatsby and Dead Poet’s Society. The characters are isolated students studying Greek classics under a single professor, who is highly selective of students he accepts. They get so absorbed in themselves and their Greek studies that it results in a murder (told to you at the onset of the book), and you find out how it all unfolds as you backtrack through the story. It’s dark and sounds really intellectual, yet the students are also so shallow. It’s a lot packed into one book. Would highly recommend reading it at least once for the experience.
