Rule of Three by Sam Ripley

2.0

I received this book in a goodreads giveaway. Although I rarely dnf a book I might have if this had been a library book. The premise is certainly interesting with the urban legend/fate/destiny theme of a “rule of three”. However the execution really feel short for me. The first of the three main characters, Amy was not a character that was easy for me to connect with, despite her being in a position that should be easy to show sympathy for. However all of the drug focus and the annoying stereotypical trying to be a baddie teenager lingo was just not it for me. The character of Ila was a bit better developed and less irritating overall, but her section seemed to drag on too long without adding much value to the goal of solving the mystery of the rule of three. Then there was her totally out of left field gore scene… finally we have Eve, the last character. Her section was also one that went on a bit too long and included scenes that felt a bit unnecessary and led to an ending that just felt rushed and messy. The ending was unsatisfying, with a reveal of the “who” but none of the “why” that makes solving a mystery interesting. I think leaving some uncertainty would make sense to fit with the urban legend idea, but the way it was done here was a fail for me.
