Songlight by Moira Buffini
5.0
I’ve been left breathless.
Songlight combines Dystopia and Fantasy in the most incredible way. Set in a world where society is rebuilding centuries after the one we know falls, we follow five different characters as they struggle to balance truth and justice.
It’s a crime, here, to have the power known as Songlight. Torches who are found are called unhuman and forced to go through a lobotomy and labor as slaves, or rat out others in exchange for very limited freedom.
When Elsa’s lover, Rye, is discovered, she’s determined to save him and get out of Northaven, no matter what. Another torch by the name of Nightingale reaches out to her, a sickly girl who also dreams of freedom. But war is looming on the horizon, as well as the returning soldiers that Elsa and her fellow choirmaidens will be forced to marry.
Our 3 other points of view are Elsa’s older brother Piper, brainwashed by his country’s propaganda and fighting to break free, Rye, attempting to escape his fate, and Sister Swan, whose position in government is as fragile as the obsession her jailer/lover has for her.
This genuinely will most likely be my top read of this month- I don’t know if anything else can top it.
