American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

Trigger warnings will be listed below.
Well I'm certainly glad to be finished with this book. Foremost, the five stars are given because this is a masterpiece of horror. It's got to be one of the strangest reading experiences I've had so far. It is a clever creation of a literal monster of capitalism, and a commentary of 80s Yuppie life that can still be related to modern day - particularly with the main character being infatuated with Donald Trump. The dialogue is fantastic and there are some very funny scenes, but that's mixed in with sudden horrific brutality and chapters entirely dedicated to Phil Collins. It's just completely absurd.
I'm a fan of the movie and honestly I think the movie is enough for me. The book however gives you the constant repetition and erratic thoughts of Bateman which you don't see in the movie. This really adds to the horror and uneasiness of this character and the world he lives in. It becomes more than just a comedy slasher that I see the movie as. The book is also /so/ much more graphic and overall too much for me. It was both enjoyable and the worst thing I've ever read.
Trigger warnings:
Graphic violence (the most graphic possible), sexual violence, sexual assault, child murder, torture, animal cruelty, animal death, homeless cruelty, racism, homophobia, misogyny, slurs, infidelity.
