#52 of 2023: Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica.

Sheeeeesh where to begin. Tender is the Flesh is a disturbing story set in a near-future dystopian American society where an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous for human consumption. After a government initiated “transition” separating humans into two different classes, people begin eating “special meat”. What is “special meat”? I’ll give you one guess. Our main character, Marcos, is falling apart as his father spirals deeper into dementia and his wife moves out after the loss of their child. Oh, he’s also is in the business of breeding and farming humans for consumption. After he receives a rare, expensive, and non-genetically engineered human as a gift, he begins to question the morality of his work and society.
