1Q84 by Haruki Murakami

5.0

1Q84 Trilogy by Haruki Murakami is one of my all time favourite books. I read it in April but I wanted to review it again. Reading this book was definitely an adventure that I wasn't expecting but definitely enjoyed being on. It is inspired by Orwell's 1984. The book tells the story of mainly two people Tengo, a cram school teacher and passionate amateur author and Aomame, a cold blooded assassin. There is a deep connection existing between this unlikely pair, which is explored as the plot goes on. The story takes place in 1Q84, a parallel world existing in the year 1984. This world has two moonsand reality is warped. Tengo is asked to edit a novel written by an unusual seventeen year old with powers and Aomame is asked to take up a dengrous mission to assasinate a cult leader. They are unknowingly in charge of each other's life.
The first book was so engrossing. I deeply enjoyed reading about the characters and their lives. It's definitely not something that you read about everyday. As usual Murakami works his magic and makes up a brilliant world and Jay Rubin has done a great job in translating this masterpiece. The way in which the subplots are connected and the timing at which the chages in the storyline is introduced is impeccable. At one point, we start wondering what exactly is real and that, I feel, is the beauty of this book. The second book was in a slower pace compared to the first but the third book made up for that and took me on a memorable journey. The book is 1000 plus pages long and it can be deeply disturbing at certain points. I took about five days to finish it and by the time I was done, I was positively out of my mind after being caught up in such a tangled storyline and it's distorted reality. A must read for all magical realism lovers and Murakami fans. Do not start with this book if you are reading Murakami for the first time, it is a little intense and long.
