Mother Courage and Her Children by Bertolt Brecht

2.0

This is my second time reading a Brecht play and I’m starting to think I just disagree with him too much. His writing is undeniably good and he has important messages to convey, but something about his philosophies surrounding how theatre should work just makes him less fun to read. It shines through in the way he structures his characters and the play itself.

Brecht is known for trying to make the audience aware that they are watching a play. Through simplicity in set and lighting and his characters just not being relatable, you are supposed to be able to gather better meeting and be inspired to act up against social issues. This play specifically did its job with distancing me from the characters… I felt nothing for them. Brecht would be happy to hear that. However it didn’t inspire me.

I think emotional pieces inspire me way more than something like this. Yes it makes you think, but it’s just boring!

Anyway, rant over. I read this for a class at college and it was interesting to discuss so I’ll give it 2 stars. Brecht and I just don’t get along I guess!
