Realm of Ruins: A Nissera Novel by Hannah West

5.0

When Valory receives her magical powers in an unorthodox way, she is summoned to be held accountable to the Realm Alliance who will decide how much of a danger her unpredictable magic poses. Along the way to her hearing she finds a wounded elicromancer dying on the side of the road. Mercer Fye, the elicromancer, carries many secrets as well as visions. He warns of the rise of an extremely dangerous and deadly elicromancer who had been trapped under a spell until accidentally released by a careless prince. When he tells Valory she is the only one who has a chance to defeat this Lord of Elicromancers once and for all, she runs away with Mercer, another friend, and her cousin to begin an epic journey to kill the Lord of Elicromancers and all his followers to save her kingdom before it's too late.

This story was so good! Another book, "Kingdom of Ash and Briars", comes before this novel but they're separated by over a century so it would be possible to read this book without reading the first but reading them in order definitely gives the reader a better appreciation for the story and characters. The plot is well written and well thought out, with predictable parts and fun twists alike. The characters are well constructed and realistic. The story borrows aspects from "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Little Mermaid" (which was so much fun!) but still has plenty of unique content that makes a great read! I love this author's writing style and hope she publishes many more books soon!
