From Kim’s Convenience to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Simu Liu’s determination shines in all his roles and now it shines in his memoir. We get a glimpse into Liu’s parents incredibly channeling journey to Liu’s own difficult path. This is not just a celebrity memoir, it’s a story of immigration, growing up between cultures, navigating a new world and mastering your own circumstances.
I’ve always been a fan of celebrity memoirs, reading about the extraordinary stories of people who have entered a world and live a life very few do is very alluring. As you can tell I’ve been devouring them this year. What I didn’t expect was to feel Liu’s story on a personal level. I teared up at the challenges his parents went through to not only come to Canada but persevere in a new country and couldn’t help by think of my own parents and our experience. Growing up between cultures was an entire section that completely pulled at me. Although our experiences had differences, my own Caucasian privilege for example, there were similarities I resonated with.
Liu’s determination and spirit is admirable and impressive. He was funny and down to earth. The writing was excellent and really pulled you into his story. Really glad I read this on so many levels.
Highly recommend this memoir. Whether you’re a reader who wants to know more about others experiences or you’re an immigrant/refugee who have gone through your own journey, this book will touch you, 5✨.
