Kingdom of Embers by Tricia Copeland

Just ok; glad it was a freebie. The plot was really good. It reminded me of the old LJ Smith Night World type books. So I should have loved it.
What kept me from getting there was constantly wondering if it was professionally edited. I've definitely read way worse. But there were a lot of scenes, like major moments, that felt rushed and not well described. Just slow down, add more.
Also, some inconsistencies annoyed me. Throughout the whole book, her mother is referred to as a chancellor, the leader, but then one character at the end calls her the queen and now suddenly even her own daughter is calling her the queen of vampires. There were others, but I waited a few days to write the review and now I can't think of them...continuity errors, errors in term. Like the boy making fun of her telling her she needs to take some melatonin (which makes you sleepy) when he meant melanin because she is pale. It would have been funny if it was a mistake on his part and she snarked back at him, but it was actually just an author error.
Anyhow, I really wanted to take a red pen to the book and that was what kept me from really falling into the story. I did finish it, but I won't read the others or reread.
