When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

5.0

Rating: 4.5

This was a very cute love story, and, while I can't speak to the accuracy of the representation, I really enjoyed reading about diverse characters with different experiences than mine. I am a total and complete fool for the enemies to friends to lovers trope and the red string of fate - kismet, if you will - trope and this book definitely delivered. I really really loved Rishi and his unapologetic, open, and honest way of loving. He was kind, sweet, loyal, thoughtful, and protective (but just the right amount). I'd love him as a friend, I'd love him as a boyfriend, I'd love him as a brother.

Buuuuut, (and this is why this book was not all the way a 5 for me), I did not particularly like Dimple's brand of feminism (though I liked her as a character and could identify with her...spirited...personality). Disclaimer: this is definitely personal, but some things she said did not sit well with me. I love art and I love reading and I like makeup and nice clothes, but I'm a computer science major, I am a feminist. Both these groups of things can belong to the same person. I am completely okay with the fact that Dimple only identifies with the latter group, what I am not okay with is her believing she is better because she does not identify with the former. To her credit though, she does (sorta) get better about this as the book goes on.

OVERALL though, I really enjoyed this book. It was cute, it was funny, it was charming, and, if it wasn't obvious, I'm a sucker for
Spoilera happy ending
