In Open Contempt: Confronting White Supremacy in Art and Public Space by Irvin Weathersby Jr.

4.0

I really wanted to love this book because I like Weathersby's premise, but it wasn't as strong as other books in the field, especially [b:How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America|55643287|How the Word Is Passed A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America|Clint Smith|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1603917194l/55643287._SY75_.jpg|86766325] which Weathersby referenced as he visited some of the same sites. His exploration of [b:In the Shadow of Statues: A White Southerner Confronts History|36978229|In the Shadow of Statues A White Southerner Confronts History|Mitch Landrieu|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1515692951l/36978229._SY75_.jpg|58783125] Mitch Landrieu's work in New Orleans was an interesting addition as it occurred subsequent to Smith's research. A good read, but not the best in the genre.
