One Last Summer by Kate Spencer
4.0
For someone who has never gone to sleep away camp I certainly seem to read a lot of books that are set there (ok, two books isn’t a lot but it’s still weird). Reading them doesn’t give me nostalgic feels, but I still enjoy the stories.
35 year old Clara Millen is living her dream. Working for an ad agency she’s a project manager and she’s sure her boss is about to announce her promotion to VP at the company wide party. Instead Amaya uses Clara as an example of burnout and tells her to take a week off of work. Clara is upset but when she stumbles across a letter she wrote at 15 to her future self she realizes she isn’t living life the way she imagined. Having this time off means she’s able to attend her sleep away camp reunion and she takes the time to reconnect with her friends and herself while figuring out where her life got so off course.
This book was very cute with some deep and poignant moments. I love how you don’t need to have been a camper to enjoy the camp activities and antics Clara and her friends get into. There were quite a few similarities to the other book about adults returning to sleep away camp I read a couple of weeks ago, but that’s to be expected given the niche of this topic.
Thank you to NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for an advanced copy of this. I’m sorry it took me so long to get to it. One Last Summer hit the shelves on June 11th.
