Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
5.0
Finished reading this at 2 in the morning. I thought I'd sleep for a while before reviewing so it'd be more coherent but alas, sleep eludes me.
This book and I, we came off to a rocky start. I came for the fantasy not really for racial tension. Then I realised, what Bree felt throughout the book is real, it's something that is still going on in today's society. It's kinda like reading [b:The Hate You Give|53522062|The Hate You Give|Angie Thomas|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1613832668l/53522062._SY75_.jpg|49638190] but less sad.
Legendborn is a King Arthur retelling with twists. I like the secret society, the usage of magic among the knights, the fight for a place as the knight's squire. Above all, I like the characters. Unfortunately, the love interest a.k.a Nick didn't shine as brightly as the proposed antagonist (Sel) in this story. I can't help but like him more despite both having tragic backstory.
20% before the book ends, we actually get to see some fast paced action. The rest was just worldbuilding and Bree going through her stages of grief.
The possession and ancestors' last minute help was just *chef's kiss*
I am not here for any love triangle despite the fact that it's going that way. Come on people, you know each other for like...a month? Sel and Nick love-hate relationship however, that's fun to explore. The resentment is palpable but you can't help but love people you grew up with.
