Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li
Did not finish book.
My first DNF in a long time - Found this kind of a slog tbh, I had to abandon it 30% in, then I skipped ahead a few times and realised it does not get better!!! I found it pretty galling that there was so little HEISTING for a heist book!!! The characters also felt shallow and constantly struggling to Sound Deep, just caught up in their heads. You need charisma and a pushing force behind stories like this, and there was just zero, especially from Will, the ostensible leader.
I also may have liked this more if an editor actually worked on this? Li floats through this and triples the word count with unnecessary, overwritten-to-death flourishes. So who knows, maybe the Netflix series adaptation will be better. But I'm not hopeful.
ETA I couldn't link it from mobile but here is my friend May's very good mean review.
