This is a YA horror book, and you can feel the genre seeping through the entire plot.

There were some bright moments — I feel like where this one really shines is in its description of its haunted atmosphere. There’s a large, near-abandoned mansion, acres of foggy forest, and a deadly lake. There’s ghostly wailing interwoven throughout, and I love a dip into Irish folk horror.

But then there’s also the base plot, which is a bunch of asshole English teenagers working through what boils down to a classism fueled feud (over a boy, naturally) in the Irish countryside. They mock Irish culture, they dismiss the horror their own ancestors perpetuated on the property they’re partying at (and the resulting corpses).

But like.. not in an interesting way.

Mostly it’s like a modern jaunt in the vein of 90’s Christopher Pike or R. L. Stine, with less instances of breasting boobily down the stairs.

That said, I’d read more by this author if the focus wasn’t a group of teens and their clique machinations.
