In a book where women rage transform into dragons, I was hoping for more literal burning of the patriarchy. There were anecdotal references to POC, Poly and trans folk, but overall it focused on the MC’s journey. Every time we got a vignette of a group of Dragons burning down the world, I wanted more of that! Even though she deals with some trauma and her own self discovery, the MC’s story still fell a little flat for me. Thought about rounding up to 4 because I think we need more non-cis, white male power in books, but I wouldn’t look to this book as a super strong example of feminist literature.

Also if you’re traditionally a fantasy reader like me, this is the lowest of low fantasy. While there’s technically magic in this book, it is rarely discussed or mentioned in detail.
