Such an endearing love story. As someone who usually prefers romance as a sideplot to the main plot, I was delighted by this book. The relationship between Maya and Jamie feels so natural, and by starting their romantic interest with a very well-developed friendship that allows them to both feel complete as individual characters, you can fully appreciate what they gain from being around each other.
The political plot that runs alongside this is fully engaging in itself, and doesn't detract from the romance while giving Maya and Jamie reasons to see each other. It allows the book to explore a whole range of issues around race, religion, politics, and general coming-of-age topics with great emotional intelligence while remaining light-hearted and positive even as the election results draw near.
I adored every page of this book. The characters are what make it shine, but everything about it is warm, funny, and endearing. I highly recommend it to anyone who struggles to find romance books that they can engage with - this one does romance perfectly.
