Moby-Dick: Or, the Whale by Herman Melville
5.0
This book is an incredible masterpiece. I read it and loved it when I was much younger, probably in my 20’s and just reread it in my 60’s. I have loved it again for completely different reasons. I think you get out of the book what you want and need, whatever that may be at different stages of your life
It can be read on so many levels, a ripping adventure story, an encyclopaedia of whaling, a book exploring religion, man’s search for meaning, a look at racial inequalities, male friendship, so so much more. I am still not sure what I think it all means, or if Ahab is a devil, god, man trying to be god or a crazy old man. But one thing I do know, this is not about a whale. I have finished the book today and will start it again straight away.
I know the writing is a bit dense and I have seen people dislike the long ‘digressions’ about whaling. The writing is rich and powerful, quite beautifully poetic. Sometimes you have to reread sections to fully grasp the meaning. But where is the harm in that, the writing sounds gorgeous to quietly read to yourself. And as for the digressions, I would argue that they are not digressions but like a blanket to wrap you up in the context and meaning behind the story. To not appreciate them would be like going to France and only seeing the Eiffel Tower, or to try and understand a whole person by just saying hello at a bus stop. Or maybe understanding a ship by taking a pleasure canoe round a fish pond. I think if you want to read a book it maybe deserves your attention for more than a sugar hit.
Anyway, if anyone reads this review, there is a fantastic series of lectures on YouTube at the link below. I read this as part of the Hardcore Literature book group. The best book group around..also linked below.
