One Of Our Kind by Nicola Yoon
dark
sad
slow-paced
3.5
this is a good concept that fell a bit flat for me
i knew what was happening so early on and there wasn’t much tension built into the plot
the final exposition of the plot disappointed me -i am not sure there was enough of a foundation for me to believe that the Black characters like King would conclude that the solution to racism is to turn all Black people white and ERASE THEIR MEMORY OF BEING BLACK.
the writing style is more straightforward than i normally prefer so that wasn’t exactly for me
however!! it created a really strong (bummed and horrified) emotional response that i appreciate in a social horror AND it made me go back to W.E.B. Du Bois “The souls of Black folk” which is always resonant
