Guts by Raina Telgemeier
5.0
This might be my favorite Raina Telgemeier book yet. There are so few books for kids that deal with the kind of regular stress that everyone goes through--there are a lot of books about kids dealing with extraordinary difficulties. But Raina is dealing with the ordinary stresses of being in middle school, going through puberty, living at this time in history, living in a crowded house with no privacy, and having an embarrassing health problem...that doesn't have an obvious physical explanation. As someone who has had gut problems at times in my life, I can totally relate. I also love the portrayal of her therapist, and how the therapist helps her, not by prescribing a drug, but by finding out what is going on in her life and steering her towards practical things she can do to make it better. As always, it's an emotionally moving read with gorgeous artwork.
