Ren gave me whiplash. She kept fluctuating between being weak, wishy-washy and strong, empowered all dependent on if she had her jade emblem. Just when you thought some character development might happen it was set back. Plus the westernized names the characters had took me out of the setting. Perhaps the second book will be better?
