4.75

i finished this baby just in time for Black History Month!

honestly, the only thing that makes me give this book 4.5* is that there were so many characters and different stories that I couldn't concentrate well on them and I got everything mixed up. pushing that aside, I think the storyline and the way of telling the stories were unique. I did need to read this and I know it's a historical fiction but I'm sure it wasn't far from what was happening back then. I think everyone should read this book especially if they want to feel the emotions other people who had gone through slavery had felt since it's so genuine and well-told. I'll even go as far as to say that every white person should read this just to have a glimpse at these hard times.

despite how it made me feel emotionally, it really is quite intimidating (size-wise) and i would get why some people would put it off for months (me, i am those people). I'm really happy that i got to read such literature and to try and put myself in black people's shoes back when they had everything stolen from them and white people were doing such cruelties as the ones described inside this DEBUT (!!!!) fictional novel. I'll make sure to read more of those and educate myself as much as i can on this topic. peace! *peace sign*
