I really don't understand the crit for this book. This book isn't trying to stay there's one kind of trans experience, or way to be trans. And sorry but I don't think using the word dyke means an author "hates lesbians". This is one story about a handful of people, a handful of especially messy people, at that. I don't know if it was just the narrator but I didn't feel the prose dragged at all, in fact much the opposite. I loved the tone and pace of this book, the way I got to just hang out in Sol's life for 6 hours.
