The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu
5.0
Didn’t help that I was coming out of a slump ish and had a trip so I didn’t get to read this as quick as I would’ve liked, but wowwwwww! I know everyone says The Grace of Kings is just a historical, dramatic prologue, but the direction of this series GAGGED ME! I would’ve never guessed at the plot.
Ken’s prose was good in book 1, but really steps it up with emotional, impactful moments with characters. Kuni, Jia, Zomi, Luan, Gin and the rest of the characters feel more real and 3D in this book. I got attached to so many of the og characters, making me nostalgic for book 1 for simpler times (shit was still fucked then so not cozy times 😭😭). I really liked Zomi’s backstory, the flashbacks ATEEE.
The first half being political af… YESS

. Second half stressed me out, battle scenes were done so well 😭😭 The whole book had this sense of dread looming over the cast AND ME.
The gods grew on me a lot in this installment. Initially, they felt a little cartoonish, but some of their moments with the characters and flashbacks.. yup we are so back.
too many moments I cried, and some of my favorite quotes ever are in this book, I should’ve annotated.
I really enjoy how expansive this series, across location and time. the only thing I’m still getting used to is making sense of the technology, but that’s just me being a visual person and struggling, but didn’t take away from my experience.
