The Philosophy of History by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
1.25
When discussing philosophy, a good way to gauge if someone is a fraud is to get their opinion on Hegel. A lot of people have strongly favorable opinions of Hegel who've never picked up a single one of his books. An oddly large number of self-proclaimed socialists worship Hegel just because Marx loosely based a few of his ideas on his philosophy, not realizing that Hegel was conservative even for his time. His entire aim in philosophy was to justify the state, Christianity, and Western tradition. Here he spent half the book discussing one race at a time, explaining why he thinks each one of them is inferior to white people, and of course doesn't forget to highlight his belief that the Germans will be the best and greatest people in all human history. He even argues that slavery was good for black people because it provided them with education and an opportunity to assimilate into white Christian society. Although Hegel ultimately says that slavery is an injustice, he prefers its gradual abolition to a sudden removal. His knowledge of ancient history is primarily limited to stuff Herodotus and Livy made up. Also the philosophy itself is kind of dumb as usual with Hegel.
