Sometimes, I really just don't understand literary fiction? This is up for a bunch of awards, and there's clearly metaphorical stuff going on that lots of people find really meaningful, but I just don't get it. Some of the writing was pretty, but that's all I can say to its favour.
Basically, there's this mountain town that's almost completely isolated from what seems to be early-20th century... maybe Europe? South America? In the community, women who've had children just randomly vanish overnight, then the whole community erases their memory by burning all their pictures, redistributing their stuff, and forgetting they ever existed. The main character decides to leave the community before she vanishes, travels to various normal cities in the country, and basically nothing happens for the rest of the book.
Why?
