A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear by Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling

4.0

A very entertaining read if you're interested in politics, nuances of wildlife management, and/or weird small town hijinx. Journalist Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling puts together the story of Grafton, New Hampshire, a small community with a long history of libertarianism and bear problems. With Grafton becoming home to the "Free Town Project" in 2004, stories started to emerge not just about the increasingly dysfunctional local politics, but also about unusual and dangerous bear behavior.

While Hongoltz-Hetling struggles a bit to prove causation between the Free Town Project and the bear issues (not to mention his somewhat peripheral, far-fetched argument about a link to toxoplasmosis), he does a good job describing the dynamics of both. I will note a content warning for animal suffering (as you can imagine, libertarians who resist state wildlife management have some creative and often cruel ways of confronting bear problems) and bear attacks on pets and humans.
