Descendant of the Crane by Joan He
5.0
5/5 stars — plot-driven and packed with twists!
I try not to buy too heavily into hype over upcoming releases for fear of being disappointed that a perfectly good book isn't as stellar as the internet made it out to be. Descendant of the Crane, though? It lived up to every word of advance praise.
Joan He created a setting where magic exists alongside the kind of prejudice and fearmongering that is all too familiar in the modern world. The novel's protagonist, Yan Hesina, struggles to find her path as a just queen while also sifting through three centuries of history to discover the dark secrets of her family and kingdom. There's something for everyone: complex family dynamics, a slow-burn romance, scheme-filled politics, explosive magic, and swordfighting. Oh, and even some courtroom drama!
Both plot and characters are intricately developed and full of surprises. This is the kind of distinct, unique writing that leaves you wanting more; I can't recommend Descendant of the Crane highly enough!
