Miracle Creek by Angie Kim
5.0
I have just finished reading and I think this may be the best book I read this year.
The subject matter is serious, there are various subjects which may be upsetting to some readers such as discussions around child abuse, sexual assault and suicide.
Angie Kim's writing at times made my stomach turn. The tension that she built during the first few chapters had me wanting to discover what happened to Henry and Kitt but once I knew I was left feeling devastated and even had to put the book down for a few minutes. I have never had a book affect me in such a way, it was just so powerful.
The twists that came were well written and the plot overall had me hooked from the word go.
The writing style was one that I really liked. Opening with first person and then changing to third person throughout the rest of the book really set the tone of 'before,' and 'after' the incident had occurred. I have found a new love for the courtroom genre of book as well. The way that I, as a reader, was finding out information at the same time as the characters in the courtroom was something I really enjoyed. The questioning by both Abe and Shannon was written so well that I could easily imagine lawyers acting they did.
Overall this book, in my opinion, is a masterpiece of writing. Angie Kim with Miracle Creek has written a book which reveals bits of information just at the right time to keep it well-paced, mysterious and at the end giving a satisfying conclusion.
