sally rooney has the uncanny ability to truthfully capture complicated relationships between people. i found myself consistently transported to conversations i’ve had with friends (even having literally said some of the book’s lines before), despite not having anything really in common with the plot on paper. her portrayal of the intimacy between people is often simultaneously beautiful, heartbreaking, lovely, and frustrating, but above all, it always feels real.
