The Sea Witch by Katee Robert
3.5
When I read the synopsis for this book (and the first 100 pages) I was convinced I wouldn't be able to enjoy it like I loved the other ones because I was already feeling the sting of betrayal. I should have known better than to doubt Katee because without a doubt I am going to love everything they write.
The only reason I didn't rate it higher was because despite my enjoying the book a lot more than I thought I would, I was still left with a very bitter taste in my mouth by the end. That's not a testament to the writing or story cause both were beautifully done, it's a statement of what I personally can handle in a story before it starts getting to me in a negative way. The betrayal in their scheme felt too close to cheating and the resulting relationship left me feeling jealous of Alaric's and Ursa's connection on behalf of Zuri (who admittedly wasn’t actually bothered). I just put myself in the story too much for me to be able to just purely enjoy the progression.
Chapter 12 was very therapeutic for me and was truly the turning point at which I started enjoying it. Zuri started becoming vindictive with Alaric and bringing the kind of righteous anger I was craving from her and it was easily my favourite encounter in the book.
