Bali Raw: An Expose of the Underbelly of Bali, Indonesia by Malcolm Scott
sad
medium-paced
2.0
My 39th book finished in 2023.
I picked this book up in my hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I read it in Vietnam, and left it in my hotel in Halong Bay.
This isn't an exposé on Bali, it's an exposé on Malcolm Scott, and what makes him a disgusting piece of shit. It's the book that literally nobody asked for.
I've never hated an author more than this guy. The way he talks about women (especially prostitutes) and Indonesians is revolting. He thinks he's so hard and goddamn important because he's white. What a slimy little Bogan.
There's one word to describe Malcolm Scott, and that's a loser. He tries to write himself as being so important and hard, but he's literally just a pathetic loser. Why would you ever want to publish something so embarrassing for the world to read?
He's a racist, transphobic, homophobic, sexist, obnoxious drunk. What a painful read. This man has serious problems. He will become violent and start attacking people for no reason, and worst of all, he tries to justify it every time. He will start fights with locals, and then acts surprised when none of the Balinese people like or respect him. What a sad, angry man.
The only way to get through it is to imagine it as a fiction (most of it is probably made up anyway), and it becomes lightly entertaining. This is enjoyable as a trashy book. Not the very worst book I've ever read, so higher than a one star.
I read this book ahead of a trip to Bali. Turns out there's nothing at all to learn from the book - apart from to avoid middle aged, tattooed, bald, white Australian bogans.
