How the Irish Became White by Noel Ignatiev

informative slow-paced

2.0

This book clearly involved a great deal of research and had an interesting premise. It was intriguing to see how Irish Americans aligned themselves with other white groups in order to benefit over enslaved African-Americans. Nevertheless, I struggled greatly to get through this book. I wish I had decided to DNF it after the first chapter, but I got to a point where I was far enough in and just decided to power through. This book includes so much superfluous information that desperately needed to be cut. It references numerous names and organizations that have so little importance to the overall discussion and just make things harder to follow. It was poorly organized and did not tie ideas together from one section to the next. What’s more, I was considering rating this higher, until getting to the afterword, in which the author essentially spends the entirety of this section criticizing the writings of others, something I found rich, given how poorly this was written.
