The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore

dark emotional informative inspiring sad fast-paced

5.0

I was so engrossed by this story that I immediately recommended it to my book club to read. I somehow had never heard of the radium girls at all until I saw a tiktok referencing them. I started reading this book and ended up narrating almost the entire thing out loud to my partner because I kept finding interesting passages to share with him, and he kept wanting to hear more and more. I read some critiques that there were too many people included in this story and it was hard to keep all the names straight. I definitely didn't find this to be the case while I was reading (and I wonder if that is in part due to the fact that I read so much of it out loud, it was a very different and more visceral reading experience than I usually have). Several months later, the detail of each woman's struggle has indeed blended together for me, but I still maintain that the power and beauty of this book IS the meticulous research that the author did to give as many women as possible the full treatment of her story being told after having been silent for so long. This book was incredible, definitely on the short list for my favorite books for the year, and I think everyone should read it.
