I looked forward to this full length novel from Shae Sanders since she became a favorite of mine awhile back. However, this novel did not capture me the same way some of her previous work in the past has. An awkward paced storyline, underdeveloped characters, along with a questionable supporting cast kept this novel from reaching its full potential.
I enjoyed the genuine humor and good ol’ fashioned black country experience depicted, but Vin and Dia needed further development as individuals to make them more impactful as a couple. Dia’s friends had me wondering whether or not they were genuinely in her corner at times. The classism and privilege they had due to their profession and lifestyles reared it’s head uncomfortably a few times.
This is a full length novel that seems like it would have been better suited as a novella considering the somewhat rushed pacing of it. I was also put off by Dia thanking her white boss for being an ally?? But if it hadn’t been for Dia being more thorough in the first place the situation that arose would not have been handled. Overall, a lighthearted story that has some hiccups but still enjoyable if you can acknowledge its shortcomings.
