Me: Elton John Official Autobiography by Elton John
5.0
Elton John's autobiography, "Me," offers fans and readers an intimate glimpse into his extraordinary and, at times, tumultuous life. Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, Elton's transformation into the flamboyant superstar we know today is both fascinating and deeply human. Indeed, the name change to Elton Hercules John does carry a certain strength that Reginald Kenneth Dwight lacks (pun intended).
In "Me," Elton is refreshingly candid about his life, a trait that deepened my admiration for him. From childhood memories like the lighthearted incident of getting his foreskin caught in his pant zipper to his battle with cocaine addiction, which nearly claimed his life, Elton leaves no sequin unturned.
Elton's inspirations were eclectic, and he uniquely made them his own. I remember thinking as a child, “Wow, Elton John is so vibrant in his fashion,” and discovering that his flamboyant style was influenced by his fashion role model, Tony King, was enlightening. Additionally, Elton’s belief that he escaped the AIDS/HIV crisis due to his preference for voyeurism over direct sexual activity was a surprising revelation.
The autobiography captures the full spectrum of Elton's life—its highs (multiple types of high) and lows. His struggle with various addictions, including his compulsive shopping, is humorously illustrated by his anecdote about his excessive candle collection:
“I’ve got 1,000 candles in a closet in my home in Atlanta, and I suppose that’s excessive. But I’ll tell you what: it’s the best-smelling closet you’ve ever been in in your life.”
I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Elton John's life through "Me." His journey, marked by his iconic status as an openly gay man who embraced his queerness early in his career - even if it took him quite awhile to fully realize his homosexuality, is inspiring. This book is a must-read, especially for fans or anyone curious about the man behind the legendary music. I can't recommend it enough.
