Reading this book, it was similar enough in many ways to remind me of the Thursday Murder Club books, which in some ways is good, but in other ways backfires, because it felt like there was something missing in this book compared to that one. This book still had the fast pace and intrigue around, trying to figure out the mystery within it. It was engaging trying to figure out how all the pieces fit together. However, I think the difference between Osman’s other series and this one, for me at least, was that this one was lacking somewhat in its characterization. With the Thursday Murder Club, all of the main characters who were so engaging and unique, and even the minor characters, and let’s go so far as to say the villainous ones, were made out to be interesting and even sympathetic in certain ways. With this book, I just didn’t quite feel that across the board with the characters. Rosie was the only one who consistently pulled me in in a similar way to the other series, with Steve occasionally being able to do so. I think all of this also made it harder to follow all of the different characters as they’re getting thrown at you in quick succession. Truly, there isn’t too much wrong with this book, and it should be taken as a testament to Osman’s previous writing that it was so good that it was hard to follow that up.
