White Is for Witching by Helen Oyeyemi

4.0

It took me about twenty pages to get into this book (it didn't help that I took a two-week pause right around those twenty pages in...). But once I understood what Oyeyemi was doing with the narrative, I was hooked.

It's a Gothic sort of coming-of-age story that reminded me a big of Shirley Jackson (I'm sure I'm the 1,000th person to make this comparison) and it has a dark playfulness that seems to laugh at everyone, including the reader. But I didn't mind it because it was just so creepy and tragically romantic.

Oyeyemi has been on my list for a long time and I'm so glad I finally got into her stuff. I will absolutely keep going.
